UCLA Recreation

Fall 2021: The Rock Wall is now open for reservations. Please look below for details.

The Rock Wall is located on the first floor of the John Wooden Center (JWC). All members of UCLA Recreation are eligible to come climb at the Rock Wall. The Rock Wall is a set up for bouldering only. Bouldering is a type of rock climbing that is done close to the ground and without the use of ropes. People at all levels of experience are invited to climb at the Rock Wall, including brand new first-time climbers.

How to access the Rock Wall
You must reserve your individual spot in a rock wall reservation timeslot using the online registration system:

  • Click “All Activities”
  • Make sure you are logged in to your UCLA account (timeslots will not show if you are not logged in)
  • On the sidebar, under “Classification,” select “Outdoor Adventures”
  • Click “Rock Wall Reservation”
  • Find the available date and time you wish to climb and complete the reservation process

You must check in with the Rock Wall staff person upon arrival. To be respectful of other climbers, please cancel your registration if your plans change as registration spots are limited.

Drop-ins are not allowed. Only those with a completed reservation will be allowed inside the Rock Wall.

First visit to the UCLA Rock Wall this school year? The staff will guide you through a brief orientation to the space and our rules. This is required, even if you are an experienced climber or climbed here in previous years.

Rules & Requirements
Climbing shoes are required. Climbers may not climb barefoot nor in non-climbing-specific shoes. Climbing shoes are available to rent for free this Fall Quarter. Beginning Winter Quarter, there will be a fee-for-use check out system. However, all first-time visitors to the Rock Wall will remain eligible for a free climbing shoe rental on their first visit.

Chalk: Communal chalk is available and may only be applied outside the Rock Wall facility. Climbers may bring their own personal chalk, but no loose chalk is permitted at all. Chalk must be in chalk balls or in liquid form. Like communal chalk, personal chalk is not allowed to be applied inside the Rock Wall facility. Keep your chalk outside the wall.

New to climbing? First time at the Rock Wall?
The UCLA Rock Wall is a great place for those who are curious to learn about rock climbing. Sign up for a spot using the registration system. Upon arrival, let the staff person know that this is your first time visiting. They will give you a quick introduction to the space, help you get some climbing shoes, and give you instructions on how to start climbing. When classes become available, we encourage you to sign up for those, too.

Classes & Competitions – Coming Winter Quarter 2022
Course offerings can include Movement on Rock, Climbing 101, and Introduction to Belaying.

We are tentatively planning a crate-stacking competition and social event for Winter Quarter. Check back for more details!

We also host a friendly bouldering competition called the Dangling Bruin annually, typically in spring.
