Rock Wall

The Rock Wall is located on the first floor of the John Wooden Center (JWC). All members of UCLA Recreation are eligible to come climb at the Rock Wall. The Rock Wall is a set up for bouldering only. Bouldering is a type of rock climbing that is done close to the ground and without the use of ropes. People at all levels of experience are invited to climb at the Rock Wall, including brand new first-time climbers.

Orientation

First visit to the UCLA Rock Wall this school year? The staff will guide you through a brief orientation to the space and our rules. This is required, even if you are an experienced climber.

Rules & Requirements

Climbing shoes are required. Climbers may not climb barefoot nor in non-climbing-specific shoes. All first-time visitors to the Rock Wall are eligible for a free climbing shoe rental on their first visit. After that, you must either bring your own, or purchase a quarter-long shoe rental.

Chalk: Communal chalk is available and may only be applied outside the Rock Wall facility. Climbers may bring their own personal chalk, but no loose chalk is permitted at all. Chalk must be in chalk balls or in liquid form. Like communal chalk, personal chalk is not allowed to be applied inside the Rock Wall facility. Keep your chalk outside the wall.

Youth & Age Restrictions:

Open recreation climbing is only available to members who are adults or minors who are fully matriculated UCLA students. Minors who are fully matriculated UCLA students will need to have a parent/guardian sign their online rock wall waiver when purchasing a quarterly pass. Please send an email to info@recreation.ucla.edu to arrange for assistance with this parent/guardian signature. Some UCLA Recreation Youth Camps visit the rock wall. So, if you are interested in signing your child/dependent up for rock climbing at the UCLA Rock Wall, that is currently the only available option.

New to climbing? First time at the Rock Wall?

The UCLA Rock Wall is a great place for those who are curious to learn about rock climbing. Upon arrival, let the staff person know that this is your first time visiting or climbing. They will give you a quick introduction to the space, help you get some climbing shoes, and give you instructions on how to start climbing. We also encourage you to sign up for our Climbing 101 class, which is typically offered a few times each quarter. Sign up in the UCLA Recreation online registration page (use the “tag” in the left column for “Rock Wall”).
