Project Highlights
Recreation is pleased to announce the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center seismic improvement project, which begun on December 16, 2024.
- In this anticipated two year project, the facility, including both swimming pools, will largely remain open during construction.
- The finished product will replace the original Sunset Canyon Recreation Center building, which has been closed for four years because of seismic deficiencies.
- Features of the new building will include three multipurpose rooms, a teaching kitchen, and a rooftop deck, all of which will support the UCLA community’s wellbeing, student group meetings and events, academic and cocurricular programs, as well as youth camps and competitive sport.

Upcoming Closures Beginning November 10, 2025
- Mapes Beach Sand Volleyball Courts will be CLOSED through January 4 as part of a necessary electrical work for the SCRC Seismic Improvement project. During this time, the Sand Volleyball Courts and Amphitheater lawn will be closed.
- The SCRC turn-around will be CLOSED. Access to the RC Parking Structure will not be impacted. There should be absolutely no parking on Easton Circle during this time. ALL cars MUST pull into the RC parking structure for all purposes.
Please also expect to see impacts and intermediate closures to other areas of the facility.
Bike Racks
Bike racks have been returned and relocated near the front entrance of the SCRC.

The SCRC main entrance remains the same. View of the entrance has been obstructed by construction fenceline and trailer.

June 2025
- Demoliton phase of the project completed.
January 6
- Beginning January 6, please expect noise disruption due to demolition and construction.
- Bike racks have been temporarily removed, they will be relocated soon and we will share the new location once installed. Please do NOT lock bikes to the SCRC perimeter fencing, doing so will be subject to removal.**
- SCRC turn around should only be used for active loading and unloading. At no time should cars be parked or left unattended.
December 16
- SCRC construction site set to be prepared for construction beginning January 6.
- Installation of new fencing and the contractor’s modular offices.
Project Announcement
Recreation is pleased to announce that the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center seismic improvement project will begin on December 16, 2024. Though we do expect there to be impacts over the next two years of the project, the facility, including both swimming pools, will largely remain open during construction. The finished product will replace the original Sunset Canyon Recreation Center building, which has been closed for four years because of seismic deficiencies. Features of the new building will include three multipurpose rooms, a teaching kitchen, and a rooftop deck, all of which will support the UCLA community’s wellbeing, student group meetings and events, academic and cocurricular programs, as well as youth camps and competitive sport.
During this first phase of construction, beginning on the 16th, the main building will be demolished. The site will be prepared for the construction of the new building, with the first step being the installation of new fencing and the contractor’s modular offices. During this installation there may be impacts to parking, the entry kiosk area, and driveway, and, as will be the case for much if not all this construction period, there will be additional noise.
When we anticipate impacts outside of the standard construction activity, we will communicate those to patrons in advance by email, Fusion app notifications, and/or the UCLA Recreation website.

Over the Summer we have moved into the next phase of the construction project. Please expect more construction vehicles in/out of the construction site and scheduled closures of facility spaces to take palce.
