UCLA Recreation offers ten summer internship opportunities geared towards applicants interested in entering into the field of collegiate recreation and related fields. Selected interns will gain firsthand experience in a comprehensive recreation program at one of the most dynamic universities in the country. General responsibilities include but are not limited to program development, administrative operations, and special projects for both the department and in a specific functional area.

The goal of our summer internship program is to foster the development of emerging professionals by immersing them in diverse and fast-paced recreation programming. Ten interns will live together in university housing for a duration of 8 weeks and will gain professional experience in a variety of areas within UCLA Recreation.

Internship Dates: June 16 - August 8

*May 30 early start date for some internship positions. (Youth and Family Programs, Aquatics, and Sunset Canyon Recreation Center)

Required Qualifications:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • First Aid/CPR Certifications (Required by the first day of employment)
  • Submit to a criminal background check.
  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree or pursuing a graduate degree.
  • Experience working in a recreation department and/or related field.
  • Possess effective interpersonal skills and a strong desire to learn
  • Willingness to work variable and extended hours.
  • Legally allowed to work in the United States.

Each functional area may require additional certifications and/or specific skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Currently working in recreation and/or related fields, and actively pursuing a career within that field.

Is this internship only for seniors and graduate students?

No! The positions are available for both undergraduate and graduate students. We are looking for enthusiastic students with experience in the specific position they are applying to regardless of what year they are currently enrolled in.

I work in a specific unit, can I only apply for that unit-specific internship position?

We encourage you to rank your position interests based on your own unique experiences. Whether that is from recreation, school, personal, professional, or extracurricular choose the positions that will help you expand your skill set.

Will I get to work across the department with different units?

Yes! Each position is unique but we work to introduce you to all parts of UCLA Recreation. The program also works to introduce you to other areas of campus including Student Affairs.

Competitive Sports

Competitive Sports Interns (2 Positions Available)

The Competitive Sports Intern will assist with the summer Competitive Sports programming, including the completion of several projects including the management of Club Sports youth camps, esports projects and activities, and martial arts program support. Interns will also assist in the planning for the 2023-2024 academic year.

Facility and Special Events

Facility and Special Events Interns (2 Positions Available)

The Facility and Special Events Intern will familiarize themselves with the various Recreation facilities spaces available to distinct patron groups including, but not limited to, students, staff, community members, professional sports teams, and outside organizations. The intern will work on various special events hosted in our spaces including staff scheduling, supervision, planning, and logistics.

FITWELL

FITWELL - Facility Intern

The Fitwell facility intern will support the transition of John Wooden Center services to alternative spaces and contribute to the mitigation effort for the loss of the Wooden Center during its upcoming seismic renovation. The John Wooden Center is UCLA’s primary Recreation facility and is situated at the heart of campus, but it will be undergoing a two-year closure for seismic alterations. The facility intern will assist in space and equipment management, layout design, purchasing, and collaboration with campus partners for all UCLA Recreation fitness facilities. The facility intern will also support the current operation and staffing for these fitness facilities while optimizing the student onboarding process. This process will include streamlining in-person training as well as planning and creating training videos. Ideal candidates would have an interest in fitness and fitness facilities as well as space and staff management.

The FITWELL Intern will contribute to an ongoing effort to transition from in-person fitness offerings to an online platform. They will assist with the further creation of an online Movement Library and learn about virtual exercise programming and safety considerations. Student Activities Center and Special Events

Student Activities Center (SAC) and Special Events Intern

The Student Activities Center (SAC) and Special Events Intern will assist in the creation of leadership trainings for staff as well as monitor compliance protocols including developing online compliance trainings. The intern will serve on various committees with their supervisor. They will also be responsible for implementing new policies or protocols they feel would be beneficial to the SAC team. They will help with and lead certain parts of special events and student group events in the building, gym, and WAF stadium.

Sunset Canyon Recreation Center (SCRC)

SCRC Facility Intern

The Sunset Canyon Recreation Center (SCRC) Facility Intern will assist in the day-to-day operations of the North Zone, which includes SCRC, Sunset Tennis Courts, Hitch Basketball Courts, Sycamore Park, and Tennis Courts. This position will include support in the supervision of the SCRC Operations student staff, management of the daily activities, events, visiting groups, and SCRC tenants. The intern will assist in the creation of training and development programs and summer staff meetings for SCRC student staff. They will also assist in the planning and preparation of facility needs for the 2025 renovation project.
