UCLA Recreation

The MAC is open to UCLA students, staff, faculty, and the community for equipment rentals on single and double-person equipment. Single and double sit-on-top kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, laser sailboats, RS Quest sailboats, RS Vision sailboats, rowing shells, and sea touring kayaks are available by reservation only.

Free UCLA Student Kayaking

UCLA students with an active Return to Rec Membership are eligible to make reservations for free sit-on-top single kayaks. UCLA students are eligible to purchase a 1 visit guest pass for a non-student in a double.

The free kayaking program is restricted to currently registered UCLA undergraduate and some graduate students. Students enrolled in a UCLA Self Supporting Degree program, extension program, graduate resident or post-doc program, are not eligible at this time.

If you are an eligible student described above and see “Active Membership Required” or are unable to enroll in the membership, please email info@recreation.ucla.edu to assist in updating your access.

NOTE: This information is for kayaking only. Students interested in renting other equipment should follow the more general rental information in tabs below and will need to pay for their rentals.

How to make a Free Student Kayaking reservation:

1. Confirm that you have an active Return to Rec – Student Membership. If you do not have an active membership, you can learn more and sign up on the UCLA Recreation Webstore. Your reservation will not be confirmed without an active membership.

2. If making a reservation for a double kayak with a non-student purchase a student kayaking guest pass. These passes and can be purchased at the UCLA Recreation Webstore. They must be purchased by the UCLA student making the reservation and are required before reserving equipment.

3. Visit our Rental Portal to view the rental schedule and availability.

4. When you have selected a reservation slot, click the block on the calendar. You will be prompted to ‘Sign In’.

a. If you have not previously made an account, you will click ‘Sign In’ and then ‘Create a new user account’. Enter your contact information and you will have access to the rental reservation calendar.

5. Click ‘New Reservation’. Confirm your name, phone number, affiliation, and equipment type, and then click ‘Create Reservation.'

6. You will be directed to complete a digital rental slip.

a. Enter your UCLA ID Number and the Order Number from the purchase of your Return to Rec Membership.
b. Read and agree to reservation policies.
c. Read and agree to rental guidelines.
d. Agree to the optional photo/video consent.

7. Submit the reservation request. Your reservation is now pending. All pending reservations will be approved or denied within 2 business days pending equipment availability. You will be contacted by MAC staff if there are any questions regarding the reservation or will receive a confirmation email when the reservation request is approved.

Notes:

  • There will be no windsurfing rentals available in summer quarter due to limited dock space and harbormaster restrictions.

Pricing and Payment:

Multi-Visit Rental Passes: Rental passes can be purchased in packages for 1, 5, or 10 visits. Only one visit may be used per day, and all visits must be used by the original pass holder. Passes can be used for stand up paddleboards and sit-on-top kayaks with no prior experience necessary. Qualified renters can also use passes for rowing shells, sailboats, or sea touring kayaks.

These passes can be purchased on the UCLA Recreation Webstore and are required before making a reservation. The purchase of a pass does not guarantee a reservation. Each visit is defined as a single 1-hour reservation block.

Rental passes are non-refundable and non-transferable. The passes are valid for 1 year from date of purchase. In the event of a reservation cancellation by UCLA Recreation for severe weather, a COVID-19 related facility shut-down, or any other reason, your pass will be credited for the visit.

NOTE: These prices and passes do not apply to the Free UCLA Student Kayaking program. Please see that tab for specific guidelines for student kayaking.

Reservation Guidelines

Reservations are required for all MAC equipment rentals:

  • Reservations can be made up to 3 days in advance in the MAC Rental Portal up until one hour prior to start of the reservation time.
  • Renters are limited to 1, 1 hour reservation per day with a maximum of 3 total upcoming reservations.
  • In the event that UCLA Recreation cancels a reservation for any reason, you will not be issued a make-up reservation.
  • Before making a reservation, interested patrons should review our facility policies and rental guidelines. Key guidelines include:

– Swim Requirement: It is a requirement that all participants in MAC programs are water safe with a minimum ability to swim 100 yards and to tread water for 5 minutes.

– COVID Safety Measures: All participants must agree to follow COVID-19 safety protocols including wearing of appropriate face coverings, physical distancing, proper sanitization, and abiding by all posted facility policy and staff instructions.

– COVID Symptom Monitoring: Prior to renting, all renters must complete a COVID-19 Symptom Monitoring Screening. For the safety of all program participants, renters should not come to the facility if any of the following apply:

  • The participant or any member of their household is exhibiting one symptom(s) of COVID-19 that first appeared within the last 10 days: fever (at or over 100.4°F or 38°C) or chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, feeling tired, muscle or body aches, headache, sore throat, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, congestion or runny nose, or new loss of taste or smell. We recommend taking a temperature reading at home prior to arriving to the facility; Participants should cancel their reservation if their temperature is at or over 100.4°F or 38°C.
  • The participant or any member of their household has been diagnosed with COVID-19 or has a suspected diagnosis of COVID-19 or pending COVID-19 test.
  • The participant or any member of their household has spent time with another individual who has been diagnosed with COVID-19 or has a suspected diagnosis of COVID-19.
  • The participant or any member of their household is currently under isolation or quarantine orders.

Cancellations:

  • Reservations that cannot be attended must be cancelled in SuperSaas (by deleting the reservation) no later than 60 minutes prior to the start time.
  • If you need to cancel within 60 minutes of your reservation, please notify MAC staff via email at mac@recreation.ucla.edu. Late cancellations may result in a visit being deducted from your multi-visit pass.
  • No shows or reoccurring late cancellations may result in the suspension of reservation privileges.
  • The MAC reserves the right to restrict activities based on weather, experience level, or other factors.

How to Make a Reservation

Reservations are required for all equipment rentals. There are two required components to each reservation:

  1. Payment:Online purchase of a multi-visit rental pass
  2. Time Slot Reservation:SuperSaas Reservation for a specific time and date

To purchase a Multi-Visit Pass:

  1. Visit the Recreation Webstore.
  2. Click ‘Log In’ in the upper right hand corner.
    a. If you are UCLA student, staff, or faculty select the grey UCLA LogOn option.
    b. If you are not affiliated with the university, but have enrolled in UCLA Recreation programs before, select the BLUE LOCAL option.
    c. If you are new to UCLA Recreation, Sign Up for a new account.
  3. Once signed in, select Multi-Visit Passes.
  4. Select ‘Marina Aquatic Center’ under category.
  5. Choose the product for 1, 5, or 10 visits. Add to cart and purchase.
  6. Note and save the Order Number (format O-######) from your purchase. You will need this to add to your reservation rental slip.

NOTE for UCLA Students:

For the free sit-on-top kayaking program, a multi-visit pass is not required. Instead, students must be enrolled in the Return to Rec Student Membership before making a reservation. A student kayaking guest pass is required for a non-student in a double kayak. For all other equipment, UCLA students must purchase a multi-visit pass, and are eligible for 50% off the community price.

    – Enter your Order Number/Pass Number from the purchase of your Multi-Visit Rental Pass to confirm you have visits remaining. Reservations will not be approved if your profile does not have an active rental pass.

  5. Submit the reservation request. Your reservation is now pending. All pending reservations will be approved or denied within 2 business days pending equipment availability. You will be contacted by MAC staff if there are any questions regarding the reservation or will receive a confirmation email when the reservation request is approved.

Day of Reservation Reminders and Procedures

Before your reservation:

  • Our Facility Policies have changed – pleased review all our policies on our main program page.
  • If you are sit-on-top kayaking or paddle boarding for the first time at our facility, you will need to watch the corresponding orientation video before coming to the facility.

Getting to the Facility:

The Marina Aquatic Center is located at 14001 Fiji Way, Marina del Rey, CA 90292.

  • Parking at the MAC is limited and available on a first come first serve basis for patrons with an approved rental reservation. If upon arrival to the facility, our parking lot is full, overflow offsite parking is available for free at Dock 52 (0.75 miles from the boathouse) or paid parking is available at the closer Fisherman’s Village (we do not validate for this lot).
  • Do not park in the Breakwater parking lot or garage - you will be towed.  Vehicles parked in any yellow striped area will be subject to tow; Parking on any yellow lines forces other vehicles to drive on the bike path endangering pedestrians and bikers. 
  • Drive slowly and carefully to and from the MAC parking lot. Watch for pedestrians and cyclists on the bike path and the Breakwater access road.  Once you reach the Marina Aquatic Center facility, drive on the striped access lane only. DO NOT drive on the LA County bike path.  When exiting parking spaces, watch for bike path traffic; stay on the striped driving lane and back into the turnaround area provided.

Timing:

  • Renters may check in as early as 5 minutes before the start of their reservation. If a renter arrives to the facility early, they must wait in their vehicle until it is time to check in.
  • If a renter does not check in within 10 minutes of their reservation time, their reservation will be forfeited.
  • Renters are responsible for maintaining the time of their own reservations. All renters must return to the dock promptly at the end of their reservation window.
  • Once back on the dock, the renter will have 15 minutes to work with the dockmaster to clean, sanitize, and put away the equipment. The renter must leave the facility promptly at the end of this 15 minute cleaning period. No loitering permitted.

Check in Process:

  • A Bruincard or Photo ID is required to rent and will be held by the dockmaster for the duration of the reservation. Cell phone and keys can additionally be help at the check in desk during a rental, but all other personal items should be stored in your vehicle. We do not recommend bringing valuables on the water so all renters should bring a watch to manage the time of their reservation.
  • Please bring only what is minimally required to the rental reservation, arrive ready to get on the water, and leave all valuables at home. You will get wet during your reservation. Please dress accordingly and have a towel in your car if possible.
  • Prior to renting, all renters must complete a COVID-19 Symptom Monitoring Screening. For the safety of all program participants, renters should not come to the facility if any of the following apply:

Rental Agreement

Swim Requirement:

  • All participants in Marina Aquatic Center programming must acknowledge that they are water safe with a minimum ability to swim 100 yards and to tread water for 5 minutes.

User Guidelines:

  • All renters are required to wear Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) while on the dock and water, at all times. Rowers are exempt.
  • A photo ID or Bruin Card at check in. Renters will collect personal IDs and belongings at check out when equipment is returned at the end of their reservation.
  • Report all collisions, injuries, and equipment damage immediately to the MAC Staff. Collisions include:

– When two vessels collide for any reason, whether they sustain damage or not.
– A MAC vessel hits or becomes stuck in rocks, mud, or any other stationary object

  • When the equipment is handled in accordance with the general guidelines stated here, as well as good common sense, it will not be damaged. However, if the rules of the road are violated, the equipment is handled improperly or irresponsibly, or attention is not paid to obstacles in the water, damage is possible. It is agreed that the renter will be responsible for any equipment damage while any Marina Aquatic Center equipment is in their use.
  • The MAC reserves the right to restrict activities based on weather, experience level, or other factors.
  • Renters must additionally agree to abide by all posted facility policies and to follow staff instructions.
