Aquatics - Lifeguard
UCLA Recreation is seeking highly skilled and dedicated individuals to join our team as Lifeguards. The Lifeguard position promotes excellent communication, problem-solving, leadership, and experience as a first responder. Lifeguards enforce pool rules, prevent accidents, and respond promptly and effectively in emergencies.
Swimming and Skills tests include:
- 300-yard continuous swim
- Underwater brick retrieval
- 2-minute treading water
Pay Rate:
- UCLA student $20.00 - $21.87
Get hired and get paid to train!
Regardless of certification status, upon a successful interview, qualified applicants will be hired and enrolled in a UCLA Lifeguard School, see Handshake for dates; non-students email lifeguard.coordinators@recreation.ucla.edu. This training includes American Red Cross Lifeguard, Blood Borne Pathogen, and Emergency Oxygen certificates in addition to our UCLA facility-specific training. All of these training sessions are paid.
Interviews will take place in person or via Zoom. If hired, applicants will need to bring their I-9 documents to their hiring session- Click here for the list of acceptable I-9 documents.

Sports Venues & Event Operations
Operations and Events Assistant
Description: Provide general maintenance and operational support for Pauley Pavilion, Drake Track Stadium, and Los Angeles Tennis Center. Most of the primary duties are physical labor and include the setup and strike of event furnishings for various athletic events and or cultural special events. Additional responsibilities include customer relations, day of event support, basic audiovisual knowledge, and facility access control.
Qualifications: Qualified candidates must be self-motivated, able to follow instructions, work with minimal supervision, and knowledgeable about the various facilities rules and be able to communicate them to clients and patrons while ensuring exceptional customer service behavior. Attention to detail is critical. Must be able to lift and move up to 50 pounds. Familiarity with the campus and surrounding community is preferred. Interest in sports is a plus.
Work Hours: You must be available to work a variety of shifts including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Shifts vary due to operation and event schedules.

Swim Instructor
Become a UCLA Rec Swim Instructor!
Interviews will take place at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center's Family Pool. Applicants will complete a group interview which includes swimming and skills tests. If hired, applicants will need to bring their I-9 documents to their hiring session- Click here for the list of acceptable I-9 documents.
Swim Instructor applicants must be able to complete the following skills :
- Must be able to demonstrate swimming 25 yards each of front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, sidestroke, elementary backstroke, and butterfly (15 yards) using proper technique.
- Must be able to demonstrate the ability to float on back for one minute.
- Must be able to demonstrate the ability to tread water for one minutes.
- Successfully complete mock teaching scenarios.
What if I want to be a lifeguard or Water Safety Instructor, but I’m not certified? UCLA Recreation offers a number of Lifeguarding and Water Safety courses throughout the year. Check the Rec Quarterly or call (310) 825-3671 for a schedule of courses.
Pay Rate: starts at $15/hr.
Work Hours: Work hours are flexible and include weekends, evenings, holidays, and quarter breaks.

WATER EXERCISE INSTRUCTOR
Job Description: Instructors plan and conduct water exercise classes, evaluate student achievement, communicate appropriately with students, and complete necessary paperwork. Work hours are flexible and include weekends, evenings. Preferred certification: AEA Certification or equivalent aquatic fitness certification, American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor, Lifeguard, Community CPR, First Aid
Instructional Programs

Marina Aquatic Center
- Instructor Positions: Kayaking, Rowing, Sailing, Surfing, Windsurfing Skilled instructors, with sport-specific knowledge and experience needed to teach recreational group classes and private lessons. Courses held mostly on weekends – must teach a minimum of 1 introductory class per quarter (16 hours). First Aid/CPR/AED certification is required. National certifications are preferred (US Sailing, ACA, US Rowing, etc). Pay starts at $18/hour.
- Dockmaster:Supervise MAC equipment rentals, facility programs, and assist community patrons. Required: ability to lift 50 lbs, current First Aid/CPR/AED certification, CA Boater Card. Preferred: Watersport experience in sailing, kayaking, and/or rowing. Pay starts at $17/hour.
- Maintenance Assistant: Assist the MAC Marine Maintenance Technician with facility upkeep, routine maintenance, and equipment repair. Required: ability to lift 50lbs, current First Aid/CPR/AED certification, CA Boater Card. Preferred: Experience in general building/facility maintenance or knowledge of repair and working with hand tools. Pay starts at $18/hour.

Outdoor Adventures - Bike Shop & Rental Center
Employees of the Bike Shop maintain the safest and most-welcoming environment possible for Bike Shop patrons and ourselves. Duties include communicating with patrons, managing bike intake/return for repairs, maintaining shop organization/cleanliness, and learning/performing basic bike repairs. We are not currently hiring. Employees of the Rental Center maintain Rental Center Gear, provide outdoor equipment rentals to current members of UCLA Recreation, and undertake general projects as needed in the Outdoor Adventures workplace. Specific tasks depend on time of year and present condition of equipment, but Rental Center employees should expect to consistently be on task because there is always work to be done. Outdoor Adventures – Challenge Course Team Building Program Assistant & Facilitator
Challenge course staff lead groups through memorable team building experiences involving high ropes climbing elements, low ropes elements, ice breakers, and games. Join our team as a Program Assistant and we’ll provide all the technical and “soft” skills training you need to become a Challenge Course Team Building Facilitator.

Outdoor Adventures – Rock Wall Staff
Rock wall staff work oversee open recreation climbing, teach bouldering classes, and host private events at the rock wall. During open recreation climbing, staff ensure that participants are informed on and follow facility rules. Periodically, rock wall staff will also instruct introductory bouldering classes. Additionally, rock wall staff host reserved, private events for groups looking to have a fun, educational experience at the rock wall. We are not currently hiring. Little Bruins Clubhouse Staff
The purpose of the Little Bruins Clubhouse Staff is to provide evening supervision for the clubhouse. The clubhouse, funded in large part by the social justice referendum, provides free and reduced cost evening youth programming for student dependents at the John Wooden Center for children diaper graduate to age 14. This program provides student dependents with a supervised, kid friendly environment for group and independent play or study time with trained youth counselors who engage children in age appropriate activities while student parents attend class or participate in evening programs or study groups on campus.
